The Macallan has long been a name associated with whisky excellence, often being referred to as the Rolls Royce of whisky. From its humble beginnings back in 1824 when the distillery was first established by a local barley farmer in the Highlands of Scotland, The Macallan brand has grown and is today recognised globally as one of absolute distinct quality.
Despite being the second biggest selling single malt whisky by volume in the world, second only to The Glenlivet, The Macallan still take great pride in remaining true to the visions, values, processes and techniques used for over a century to ensure the quality of their highly revered product. This includes the use of their now famous small-copper-stills, from which they only take 16% of the final distillation – what they call “the best of the best”- and the sourcing of the finest Spanish and American sherry casks.
It’s craftsmanship such as this that separates The Macallan from the competition and allows them to produce such an exquisite range of whisky; one of which is The Macallan 25 Year Old Sherry Oak.
We were lucky enough to get to taste The Macallan 25 Year Old Sherry Oak, which we now have back in stock here at The Whisky Shop. This is a whisky developed for the true whisky connoisseur and is as a result a whisky that is rather hard to come by. If you are like us and are lucky enough to have the opportunity to sample this fine dram, then you are in for a treat. If however you are in the market for a truly defining Scotch whisky then this could well be exactly what your collection is missing.
Presented in wonderfully crafted oak box, The Macallan 25 Year Old Sherry Oak is sophisticated and bold in its appearance. Rich mahogany in its appearance – gifted to this whisky from the Spanish and American sherry casks in which it has matured – and contained within a traditionally shaped bottle complete with elegant whit, gold and maroon labelling. As appearances go, The Macallan 25 Year Old Sherry Oak is certainly a distinguished dram.
But were more interested in what lies within the bottle. So as this rich, luxurious liquid is poured respectfully into our glasses, an excitement starts to grow.
Nose: First off there is definitely a sweetness, which is as to be expected from a sherry cask whisky. This is joined by a citrus aroma, orange zest with a hint of cinnamon and the impression of an open wood fire.
Palate: Again there is a distinct sweetness from that sherry cask; the overall taste is rich and indulgent, dried fruit, caramel and a warming oaky smoke.
Finish: With such rich bold flavour the finish is long with a fantastic spice that lingers.
Tasting The Macallan 25 Year Old Sherry Oak at this time of year was actually rather fitting, the aromas and flavours are all very festive which really lifted our Christmas spirits whilst tasting. As with other Macallans we have tasted the quality is exceptional. This is a delightful dram, wonderfully smooth and easy to enjoy.
